Petrified Forest
On our third day of the tour in Mississippi let’s go visit Flora MS, to the petrified forest where you can see 36 million year old trees. Petrified means that organic material of the once-living tree has been slowly replaced with minerals. This transformation occurs on the cellular level as minerals fill the voids created from dead cells to gradually turn living material to stone. Let’s take a 6 block long nature trail to see various species of petrified wood and giant petrified logs. After the tour of the forest let’s go to the Earth Science Museum to explore a collection of fossils, petrified wood, and minerals from nature. After everyone is done exploring let’s flume for gemstones. We can keep the interesting ones we find. As we leave the native wildlife life display, we come on out to the pavilion picnic area. It’s around 1:00 pm, so let’s have our lunch. After lunch, let’s explore the fluorescent minerals exhibit and the educational exhibits to see the animals fossils. As the last thing let’s visit the petrified forest gift shop and the patio rock shop, to take a piece of petrified wood home to remember our journey through time |
