Jackson, Mississippi (cont...)
Old Capitol Museum
Old Captiol Museum, served as Mississippi’s state house from 1839 to 1903. Completed in 1839, the Old Capitol is Mississippi’s National Treasure and Jackson’s oldest building. Let’s watch the innovative interactive exhibits that give us a sense of political discourse during bygone days when all three branches of state government, the executive, legislative and judicial, were housed in the Old Capitol. As school students, let’s be Metropolis Makers and Masters of Greek Revival Architecture. Let's work together to plan and create a town including various Greek Revival Architectural elements, the Rosette, Ionic Columns, Corinthian Columns or Doric Columns, Palmette, Anthemion, and Acanthus Leaf. |
For a few minutes, let’s argue the cases before the Supreme Court Judges on the second floor and learn about the judicial process.
Let’s be the members of legislature reenacting the 1861 Secession Convention, or the 1890 Constitutional Convention or even suggest changes to the current constitution.
Let’s pass a law much like the nineteenth century legislature that passed the Married Women’s Property Act, in 1839, Mississippi’s secession from the Union in 1861, and the state constitutions in 1868 and 1890.
Let’s hear the story of an amazing Chickasaw Indian, Betsy Love, who was behind the landmark Married Women’s Property Act of 1839.
Once we are done, let’s stroll down the Capitol street to Mississippi Governor’s Mansion.
